So, there are a few different editions you can pick up of shiny, new, sneaky Assassin's Creed Origins. Most of them fall well within the bounds of what we'd expect. Steelbooks and art books are pretty regular. Sure, throw in a soundtrack here and there... maybe a cheeky mission for pre-orders (although we all hate those bonuses secretly). However, Ubisoft have truly outdone themselves this time.

$800 will get you the super uber omega ultra extreme plus version of Assassin's Creed Origins. Eight. Hundred. Dollars. Oh, but perhaps they give you actual treasures from the tomb of a long-dead Egyptian pharaoh, that'd be neat. Nope.

For your $800 you'll receive:

  • A gold steelbook (presumably made of steel not ancient Egyptian gold)
  • A pretty large statue (28.7" to be precise)
  • A map
  • Some lithographs
  • The Season Pass
  • A soundtrack
  • An Artbook
  • Art cards
  • And an eagle amulet.

I mean, it's not terrible but this promises to be the only thing out of E3 this year that's more overpriced than the Xbox One X.

For the price of this collector's edition you could buy both consoles to play the game on and have change leftover to buy the actual game on both. You could buy a decent PC capable of playing it. You could buy a measure of sanity. I will never understand the need to have a horrifically over-priced version of the latest game pre-ordered before you've had a chance to get to grips with it yourself, but if you're that kind of person, act fast as there are only 999 going into circulation.

Personally, if this version doesn't come with it's own pet eagle to send jetting off to see if the queue is long at the shops before you decide to set out, I'm out.
