[Review] - Star Wars Uprising

When Star Wars: Uprising was announced around E3 2015 as a mobile based RPG that would allow you to play as a new character in the Star Wars universe, with multiple features like in game guilds, customization, and companions, fans across the galaxy were understandably excited after years of longing for another experience like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic gave us in 2003. Does Uprising deliver on the promises it made before launch and lead us soaring into the Star Wars universe like the Millennium Falcon? Or does it fall flat on its face like a failing hyper-drive?

Well in truth, the answer is a little of both. Upon loading into Uprising for the first time, creating my character, and playing a few of the story missions, I was engrossed in the world, its story, and the missions I was playing. Playing further into the game however, the player starts to notice a very repetitive feel. The missions are mostly same-y “go here, kill a bunch of bad guys, maybe a boss, return” type missions and the story feels disjointed and sloppy after a while. Your character never feels like he or she has meaning in the world or impacts the world in any meaningful way, which is a shame. They had an opportunity to bring the Star Wars universe to mobile platforms in a way that was larger than previous mobile offerings and failed miserably.

Luckily, the game thrives in other areas. The character customization is extremely well done here, with a seemingly endless sea of new gear to acquire and level up. You can also send your companions you attain in game on missions to gain resources to upgrade your gear. It is here that Uprising shines, I have sunk at least 60 hours into the game so far just in companion missions and upgrading my gear. Its extremely satisfying to see the time you've spent pay off when you have enough resources to get that next gear upgrade. It’s a shame that the rest of the game isn't on par with how wonderful this system is.

PVP in any sense is almost non-existent. Which is also a shame. What good is having an online clan/fleet feature if you can't take your fleet members on a raid of another clans base or lead them in a PVP arena against a rival clan?

“It could have been a KOTOR sequel but it isn't.”

Overall, Star Wars: Uprising feels like a game that had great concepts behind it and then they tossed them all out the window save one or two to make the game launch in time for Episode VII. It’s a true shame, as this could have been the spiritual successor to KOTOR that Star Wars and RPG fans have been wanting and needing for 12 years. It's as if millions of fans cried out, and were ignored completely by the developer. And I'm not sure how to feel about that...
